Otík's Footbridge

In collaboration with the Prague 11 City District, we ceremoniously unveiled the “Otík’s Footbridge” commemorative plaque on Thursday, April 23, 2026, which commemorates an iconic scene from the film *Vesničko, má středisková*. This new artistic feature was created through a public art competition, and its design was selected by the residents of Jižní Město in a public vote.

Twenty-six artists submitted a total of 25 designs to the competition, which was announced at the beginning of 2026. A panel of experts selected three finalist designs, from which the public subsequently chose the winner. The author of the winning design is Barbora Burianová.

The commemorative plaque is located on the pedestrian bridge in Háje, which was built in the 1970s as part of the development of Jižní Město. The footbridge was designed in the spirit of the urban planning of the time, with an emphasis on separating pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and to this day serves as an important connection in the area. Thanks to the film *Vesničko má středisková* (1985), in which a famous scene featuring the character Otík takes place here, the footbridge earned its unofficial name, “Otík’s Footbridge.”

“Otík’s footbridge at the exit of the Háje metro station is one of the district’s recognizable symbols, even for those who do not live in Jižní Město. Although today’s bridge is not the original one, visitors still associate it with Jiří Menzel’s famous film. As mayor, I am pleased that it contributes in this way to the positive image of our district,” said Martin Sedeke, mayor of Prague 11.

“Otík’s Footbridge is a wonderful example of how film history can take on a life of its own and become a natural part of our everyday public space. I am all the more pleased that the final form of this work of art was decided by the residents of Jižní Město themselves, for whom this place is truly close to their hearts. It’s a great way to revitalize our culture while also fittingly celebrating the 50th anniversary of our housing estate,” says Zuzana Böhmová, Deputy Mayor of Prague 11 for Culture, Sports, and Digitalization.
